When should I be using a mouthwash
Before you decide to splash out on mouthwash, have a look at the evidence and decide if it's going to get you the results you want.
Mouthwash is a popular addition to many people's oral hygiene routines. It promises fresh breath, plaque reduction, and even protection against gum disease. However, like any product, mouthwash has both advantages and disadvantages. In this blog, we’ll explore both sides to help you decide if mouthwash is a good fit for your dental care routine.

Advantages of Using Mouthwash

One of the most common reasons people use mouthwash is for its ability to freshen breath. Mouthwash often contains ingredients like menthol or eucalyptus, which provide an immediate burst of freshness. This can be particularly useful after meals, before social interactions, or for those who struggle with chronic bad breath (halitosis).
  1. Freshens Breath Instantly
    One of the most common reasons people use mouthwash is for its ability to freshen breath. Mouthwash often contains ingredients like menthol or eucalyptus, which provide an immediate burst of freshness. This can be particularly useful after meals, before social interactions, or for those who struggle with chronic bad breath (halitosis).
  2. Reduces Plaque and Gingivitis
    Many mouthwashes contain antimicrobial agents like chlorhexidine or cetylpyridinium chloride, which help reduce the buildup of plaque—a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. Regular use can prevent plaque from turning into tartar, which can lead to gum disease (gingivitis). This makes mouthwash a valuable supplementary tool in keeping gums healthy.
  3. Helps Fight Cavities
    Some mouthwashes contain fluoride, which strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent tooth decay. Fluoride mouthwash can be particularly beneficial for people who are prone to cavities or those who live in areas where the water supply doesn’t contain fluoride.
  4. Easy and Convenient
    Mouthwash is quick and easy to use. A swish for 30 seconds to a minute can feel like a convenient solution for those with limited time. It’s also portable, allowing users to freshen their breath or protect their oral health on the go.
  5. Improves Overall Oral Hygiene
    While mouthwash isn’t a substitute for brushing and flossing, it can enhance the effectiveness of your oral hygiene routine. By targeting areas that may be hard to reach with a toothbrush, mouthwash can provide a more comprehensive clean, reducing bacteria and maintaining overall oral health.

Disadvantages of Using Mouthwash

  1. May Contain Alcohol
    Many over-the-counter mouthwashes contain alcohol, which can cause dry mouth if used too frequently. A dry mouth reduces the amount of saliva available to wash away food particles and bacteria, which can actually worsen bad breath in the long run. Alcohol-based mouthwashes can also be irritating to people with sensitive gums or mouth sores. There is also a theoretical link between mouthwash and oral cancer.
  2. Not a Substitute for Brushing and Flossing
    While mouthwash can supplement your oral care routine, it doesn’t replace brushing and flossing. It cannot physically remove food particles or plaque from the surfaces of your teeth like a toothbrush and floss can. Relying on mouthwash alone for oral hygiene is definitely not recommended.
  3. Potential for Staining Teeth
    Some mouthwashes, especially those containing chlorhexidine, can cause staining of the teeth if used over long periods. While the stains are usually superficial and can be removed by a dental professional, they are still a concern for those who want to maintain a bright, white smile.
  4. Can Cause Irritation
    Certain ingredients in mouthwash, particularly alcohol and strong flavors like mint, can cause irritation to the gums, cheeks, and tongue in some individuals. For those with sensitive mouths, this can lead to a burning sensation or discomfort.
  5. May Alter Taste Sensitivity
    In some cases, mouthwash can leave a lingering aftertaste that affects your ability to taste food and drink properly. This is usually temporary, but it can be bothersome for people who are sensitive to changes in taste.​
